Michael J. Krause serves as the Executive Director of Ohio Peer Recovery Organizations (OhioPRO). He has served OhioPRO in this capacity since June 2021 and is its inaugural Executive Director. Michael is a tireless advocate for all individuals in, or working towards, recovery and the peer-run organizations that provide recovery support.

Under his leadership, OhioPRO has enjoyed remarkable success in its many strategic initiatives. His accomplishments over that time include developing a mobile application to be used by certified peers, creating funding opportunities for peer-run organizations, and engaging the peer community through learning opportunities.

He has a personal passion for recovery because he, too, is a person with a lived experience and is in sustained recovery. Michael has served in a variety of executive-level positions throughout his professional career; a majority of that service was within the affordable housing industry. Michael currently lives in Columbus, Ohio.  He received a Juris Doctor from the University of Akron School of Law and a Bachelor of Science from Westminster College.

As a writer, photographer, and peer recovery supporter, I believe storytelling can make a difference in people's lives. As a person in mental health recovery, I know firsthand the importance of sharing personal stories and fostering an open community. And I believe that OhioPRO is an organization that champions those values in our state.

Before starting at OhioPRO, I worked for the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services in their Public Affairs Office for five years. In 2022, I participated in the inaugural Mental Health Youth Action Forum, hosted by MTV and The White House. Through this program, I worked with 30 other young adults in the mental health advocacy space to develop online campaigns centered around helping youth and young adults with their mental health. The forum culminated in a public discussion around mental health with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and actress Selena Gomez at The White House.

I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative and Professional Writing from Capital University in 2016. In 2023, I earned a Certificate in Photography from the University of Washington and am continuing my education through the UCLA Extension School.

I hope that by working with OhioPRO, I can continue to grow my passion for storytelling and develop new skills to share the stories of peer supporters from across Ohio and help foster change and innovation in the peer community.
